The Global Financial Crisis of 2007–2008 is considered by many economists to be the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. It resulted in the threat of total collapse of large financial institutions, the bailout of banks by national governments and downturns in stock markets around the world. The housing market also suffered, resulting in elevated evictions, foreclosures and prolonged unemployment. As the housing bubble burst, the loan default rate spiked and servicers were forced into a new landscape of loan servicing. Law firms were suddenly thrust into unchartered territory of audits, compliance, and accountability.
